Polish name: forest chervil
Latin Name: Anthriscus sylvestris Hoffm.
Family: celeries Apiaceae (umbellifers Umbeliferae)
Status in Poland: native, common
A tall, though only annual plant with white umbels without involucres. The stems of this chervil are tomentosed at the base, angular in cross-section, grooved and hollow inside.
Ciliate leave , tri- or dipinnate.
The inflorescence of our plant is an umbel compound of smaller umbels, while these in turn consist of single, inconspicuous, snow-white flowers. Single flowers are clustered in characteristic of chervil, devoid of involucres (bracts growing from base of the entire inflorescence) compound umbel, with cover composed of many leaves. The calyx of the flower is inconspicuous with barely noticeable teeth of sepals, and corolla with entire-margined, obelliptical petals. There are always 5 stamens, and 2 pistils with lower, two-ovule ovary provided with a stylopodium.
The fruit will be a schizocarp, typical for celeries, cracking at two mericarps. In the case of cow parsley, they are characterized by petioles always shorter than the fruit, no costas, linear or tapered shape, short rostrum, and shiny and smooth surface.
A shade-loving plant. It grows on the margins of forests, by roads, in meadows, and in damp thickets, and in ruderal places.
Cow parsley is indicated for nitrogen-rich habitats. Due to the fertilization of agricultural lands, this species spreads and dominates.
Cow parsley is distinguished by the most extensive geographical range within the entire genus Anthriscus.. It occurs wild from Western Europe to China. On the south its compact range reaches the highlands of Abyssinia, and detached, relict locations can be found even in Drakensberg in South Africa.
Eagerly used as a remedy for strengthening the body’s immunity, or as a medicine for eye inflammation.
An insect-pollinated plant willingly visited by bees. Cow parsley is a honey plant. Locally, it can be an important component of the feeding base near the apiary.
