Fine, creeping perennial with lots of adventitious roots that are shallow but strong.

Compound three-leaflet leaves on very long petioles. A horseshoe image is visible on the surface of each leaf. The membranous, ovate, ending by a subulate outgrowth stipules fuse into a tube that protects the shoot.

A single flower with a typical papilionaceous structure has a white- or cream-colored corolla with a tube shorter than the red clover’s one. The whole head consists of 40-80 flowers, grows on a long stalk, turns brown after pollination.

The fruits are elongated two- or four-grained easily breaking pods, rising up in the infructescence.

Seeds inconspicuous, shiny, yellow or yellow-orange, heart-shaped, hard, and deep dormant. They can pass through the digestive systems of many herbivores without harm.
